World Food Day - 2021
“Our Actions are our future. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and better life”
Food being the most basic need for humans, it is vital to spread the preciousness of food worldwide hence, we celebrate a “world food day”. This day aims at tackling global hunger and striving to eradicate hunger across the world.
Every year, for this day, they come up with a new theme that revolves around agriculture, food, and investments to increase the production of food products. As for this year, “Our Actions are our future. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and better life” is the theme.
Did you know while some are wasting food, some people are struggling to consume at least one meal per day? This is due to the imbalance of food distribution worldwide resulting in malnutrition and obesity in the population. Moreover, the way we grow, eat, and, sadly, waste food imposes a massive toll on our planet, putting unnecessary pressure on natural resources, the environment, and the climate. An Agri-food system is the solution FAO has found for these problems. It may be a complex term but actually, our lives depend on it. Every time we make, choose, consume, and store food, we become a part of this Agri-food system. Providing a variety of safe and healthy food sufficiently for an affordable price to everyone and reducing the wastage of food is the main focus of a sustainable agri-food system.
The COVID-19 pandemic made a drastic change in food distribution and supply. It has made it even harder for farmers to sell their harvests and millions of people require emergency food aid. We need sustainable agri-food systems that are capable of nourishing 10 billion people by 2050. Therefore while celebrating this day we should engrave it in our minds that we should not take food for granted. There are so many people working hard to ensure we have food on our plates daily.
